Waterwheel Quest Stuck

Quick Answer

If DREADMOOR is stuck while fixing the waterwheel, compare the journal objective with the machinery you have actually repaired.

If DREADMOOR is stuck while fixing the waterwheel, compare the journal objective with the machinery you have actually repaired. Missing parts, unfinished water routing and buckets that appear installed but are not counted are different problems. Restarting or loading an earlier save has helped some players with the bucket issue, but neither is a guaranteed repair.

This page concerns The Throat in the October PC demo. It does not prescribe a fixed installation order or claim that one order can recover every affected save.

Identify the stage that has stopped

What you can observeWhat to check next
Generator is not runningComplete the generator's fuel and startup interaction
Journal still asks for machinery repairsInspect the remaining repair points rather than only the water controls
Both buckets appear installed but the journal still requests themTreat this as a possible registration problem
Repairs are accepted and the journal requests water flowContinue the normal routing task until both wheels turn
Both wheels turn and the objective advancesReturn to the Gate Control

The generator supplies power, but power alone does not finish the restoration. The Throat also has separate mechanical and electrical repairs, including bucket positions and the Water Pump. Installing one part does not establish that all the damaged assemblies are complete.

Check physical repair points before replaying the puzzle

Move between the working areas and examine the remaining interaction prompts. Identify the missing component at each point before carrying another part across the structure. In particular, distinguish the wheel buckets from the other mechanical or electrical installation points.

The damaged Water Pump is repaired in place. Do not assume that being unable to find a replacement pump at a crafting station means the task has become impossible.

Use the quantities and part names displayed by your current repair interaction. Recipes and version labels reported for different demo builds do not justify forcing one material list onto every installation.

When installed buckets fail to count

A suspected registration problem is more specific than simply being unable to open the gate. The useful evidence is that both bucket positions visibly contain their parts while the journal continues to request bucket installation.

Before replaying a large section of the demo:

  1. Keep the affected save if you can preserve it without overwriting your earlier progress.
  2. Quit and restart the game, then inspect the same objective again.
  3. If the objective remains unchanged, check whether you have a save from before the bucket installation.
  4. Consider replaying from that point only after accepting the progress you will lose.

Loading an earlier save returns to an earlier state; it does not repair the current save in place. Keep that distinction clear when choosing between a rollback and reporting the blocked quest.

Dying, swapping which bucket is installed first or installing the buckets last has not worked consistently. Repeating those actions is not a dependable reset procedure. A normal successful repair sequence also does not prove that its order can rescue a save that has already stopped registering progress.

Stop treating the water controls as a repair reset

Once the physical repairs are accepted, the next task is to send water to both wheels. That is a normal machinery puzzle. It does not reset an earlier bucket-registration failure.

The displayed objective helps distinguish an accepted routing stage from unfinished repairs.

If the journal still names a missing repair, return to that repair point. If it has advanced to water flow, watch the channels and both wheel assemblies while adjusting controls. The objective is more reliable than assuming every problem in the area has the same cause.

When reporting a persistent block, include the displayed objective, which parts are installed and whether restarting changed anything. Preserve the affected state rather than overwriting your only save while testing a rollback.
